Princess Diana appeared on the cover of New York magazine on Feb. 6, 1995, with the headline, "Newish American Princess." The city's press went wild for the fashionable royal, and so did celebrities.

White House honors Diana for her charitable work

Throughout her adult life, Princess Diana was tied to numerous charities. In 1996, Diana was the guest of honor during a breakfast at the White House thrown by Hillary Clinton in support of the Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research. Other honorees included former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, clothing designer Ralph Lauren and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

Diana celebrated her 36th birthday with a star-studded affair at the Tate Gallery in London. It would be her last.

On Aug. 31, 1997, Diana and her companion Dodi Fayed were fatally injured in a car crash in Paris. Her driver was also killed in the crash. Then-British Prime Minister Tony Blair was visibly shaken as he addressed a nation in mourning the following day.
