Manhunt ends after clerk's killing; man, missing teen both now suspects

NASHVILLE -- An hours-long manhunt has ended in Nashville after a clerk's slaying, and police say the man and missing teen they had been searching for are both considered suspects in the murder.

Metro Nashville Police officials said 28-year-old Daniel Clark has been identified as the suspect who fatally shot 58-year-old clerk John Daniel Stevens during a robbery at an Exxon station.

Clark was believed to be with a missing 15-year-old girl, who is from the east Tennessee town of Dayton. The girl went missing Monday after getting on a bus to her high school, the station reports.

The girl was seen on surveillance video with Clark Tuesday at the scene of the Nashville murder, police say.  The girl appeared to be shopping for a short time before Clark allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the clerk, reports the Tennessean. The two then left the store.

Police combed the area for hours before a tip from a dump truck driver Wednesday morning led them to the pair on an embankment behind trees, the paper reports. The two surrendered to a SWAT team without incident.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation had initially announced an Amber Alert for the girl and said she was in danger.  Now, however, they consider her a suspect.

"Both individuals are under investigation for a homicide. Both are homicide suspects. It is this departments belief that (the girl) had the opportunity to flee. We do not see any indication she was held against her will,"  Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron told the paper.
