Obama: "We are fully supportive" of Israel's right to act against Hamas

(CBS News) President Obama continued his Southeast Asia visit through the weekend, making his mark as the first U.S. president to visit both Cambodia and Burma. Mr. Obama delivered a speech on human rights in Burma -- a country that has struggled under decades of repressive rule -- but also made several remarks about the mounting violence in the Middle East.

In Thailand, Mr. Obama called for a negotiated truce to the Gaza conflict but came out strongly in defense of Israel's right to defend itself against Hamas' missiles.

"There's not a country on earth that would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens from outside its borders," Mr. Obama said. "We are fully supportive of Israel's right to defend itself from missiles landing on peoples' homes."

The president also warned against further escalation, delaying the possibility of peace talks. CBS News' Bill Plante reported on Monday that according to White House sources, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and James L. Jones, Mr. Obama's national security adviser, are talking with their counterparts in Israel and with Hamas via Egypt, urging both to work toward a cease fire.
