South Carolina newspapers evolve a new paradigm to survive

In South Carolina in 2020, ten local newspapers folded their print editions, and those that remain are often shoestring operations. But some papers are bucking the trend, either by hiring staff, or collaborating with other papers to expand their coverage and investigate corruption in local governments. And readers are supporting them for providing news they can't get anywhere else. "Sunday Morning" senior contributor Ted Koppel looks at how journalists are maintaining small-town papers at a time when industry trends are pessimistic.

In Baltimore, changing minds, and saving lives

In Baltimore, where gun violence claims the lives of hundreds each year, what is missing from so many young men is a solid foundation. The youth workers behind a program called Roca (Spanish for rock) aim to provide that grounding, by teaching alternative ways to handling the stresses of life in a challenging environment. As one Roca participant, a former drug dealer, tells "Sunday Morning" senior contributor Ted Koppel, "I came a long way, from nothing to something now."

Making the American Dream of home ownership possible

A program organized more than 40 years ago by local churches in East Brooklyn and the Industrial Areas Foundation to build a community within a destitute neighborhood – where no one would wish to drive through, let alone live – has since enabled first-time homeowners to build equity, and hope for the future, as the homes have become, literally, the foundation of community development. And the forces behind the Nehemiah housing project have never stopped, expanding to cities around the nation, where they have built 6,500 homes. "Sunday Morning" senior contributor Ted Koppel reports.

Senior contributing correspondent Ted Koppel visits Mount Airy to find out what attracts so many nostalgic for a show created more than 50 years ago. Confronting Putin: What can Americans expect?

No one can possibly know for sure what Russia's leader Vladimir Putin – who has launched a full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine – may do next. But how might Americans be forced to sacrifice in hopes of saving Ukraine's fragile young democracy? And will Putin's weapons of warfare (cyber or nuclear) target the U.S. and the West? "Sunday Morning" senior contributor Ted Koppel talks with Russia experts Fiona Hill and Nina Khrushcheva (great-granddaughter of Nikita Khrushchev), retired Gen. Keith Alexander, and former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta.

When coronavirus vaccinations were first offered late last year, millions of Americans flocked to sign up. But some — especially in historically underserved communities of color — were hesitant, if not outright opposed. Senior contributor Ted Koppel sits down with community leaders and healthcare workers to explore the roots of this skepticism, and the challenges of getting the vaccine to the people who need it the most.

Dr. Anthony Fauci: Divisiveness has failed America

"Sunday Morning" senior contributor Ted Koppel talks about the latest efforts to address the coronavirus pandemic with the Biden administration's chief medical advisor, Dr. Anthony Fauci, who says the goal of 100 million vaccinations in 100 days is entirely achievable. Fauci also discusses how politicization of public health measures (like wearing masks), mixed messaging from the Trump White House, and claims that COVID-19 is a hoax have thwarted America's efforts to limit the pandemic's toll.
